What is a PDA Event?
PDA track events are driver education events, teaching high performance driving techniques on track in a controlled environment. There is no racing, race instruction or timing. These events are also known as HPDE (High Performance Driver Education). All drivers are registered into groups based on their track experience. Groups are "on track" in separate sessions, with safety workers and flaggers provided.
At what tracks do you run events?
All drivers must be at least 18 years of age, and must have a valid driver's license.
What do I need to participate?
You must supply your own vehicle (no SUVs) that passes a tech inspection ( basic safety inspection) You need to have functioning seatbelts for the driver and front seat passenger. You should try to have your own helmet with a Snell SA-2005 rating, but we do have loaner helmets available for a small rental fee. We do not require a driving suit or fire extinguishers for street cars.
Can I have a Tech Inspection done ahead of time?
Yes, you can print a form from the website and take it to your own licensed garage or mechanic. He must do the inspection and sign and date the form with his name and business name. Inspections should be done within one week of the scheduled event date. You will still have to go thru inspection at the track to check your helmet and for loose items in the car.
Is it necessary to attend preliminary drivers meetings?
Always attend the preliminary drivers meeting no matter what you are doing. This meeting is required attendance at all driving schools. Some schools will not allow you on the track unless you have attended their safety and drivers meetings and the ongoing classroom sessions.
Will I be grouped with people that are more experienced that me?
You will be grouped with people of similar experience for the classroom and track sessions. Groups can be sectioned into three or four levels of expertise. Basically, participants are divided into beginner - HPDE 1, lower intermediate - HPDE 2, intermediate - HPDE 3 and experienced drivers - HPDE 4. You will remain in your assigned group unless your instructor feels it wise to move you.
My car is a convertible, can I participate?
Convertibles with factory-installed roll bars or roll over protection can participate. If you have a hard top for your vehicle no roll bars are required. When roll bars are present, the top of the driver's helmet must be below the line between the top of the windshield and the top of the roll bar.
What is a typical day like?
The track gates open at 7am, and registration/ tech inspections start right after that. At 8:30 am there is a mandatory drivers meeting and first cars (experienced drivers) will be on track about 9am. Novice drivers will go to a classroom for instruction and to be paired with an instructor. The day continues with each run group alternating in 20-25 minute sessions until about 5pm.
How much track time do I get?
Each run group will get four 20-25 minute sessions on the track. Novices and Lower intermediate groups also receive two classroom sessions during the day. Advanced groups meet for one classroom session.
Do I need a number on my car?
When you register online, you can request a number on your form. You can put this number on your car with magnetic numbers, static cling or adhesive vinyl, or tape. If you do not choose a number when you register online, one will be assigned to you at the track. Numbers provide the corner workers with an easy identification for each vehicle.Numbers must be on both sides of the vehicle, preferably on the doors. Adhesive numbers are for sale at registration for $1 each
What should I bring to the track?
Besides your paperwork, state driver's license, helmet and a full tank of gas, there are other suggested items you might bring to make your day more comfortable. You must wear long pants, long sleeved shirt and rubber soled shoes (sneakers are OK, no sandals). Bring extra clothing in cooler weather, and rain gear is always a good idea. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are also advisable. Bring fluids to drink especially in hot weather (no alcohol). All tracks have concession facilities but you can pack food or snacks. A tire gauge, a small tool kit, extra oil/ brake fluid, and Windex /towels are recommended. Your car must be empty to run on the track so a large garbage bag, duffel bag or plastic bin is a good idea to keep your "stuff" all together. At home before you leave, clean everything out of the car that you don't need at the track.
What happens in bad weather?
PDA schools are run rain or shine unless cancelled by the track officials for unsafe conditions.
What if I need to cancel?
PDA has a generous cancellation policy which you can find in the "About Us" section on the website.
Will I have to work a Flag Station?
No, PDA employs professional flaggers for all their events.
Will my instructor drive my car?
Only if you ask him to do so to evaluate your car or show you a particular line and/or braking sequence.
Open Track days are for advanced drivers (HPDE 3/4/ 5 Blue/ Red/ Black). There is no instruction. Track time is divided into a morning session, then lunch, and an afternoon session with a mid-afternoon break for the corner workers. Without any incidents, drivers could participate in almost six hours of on-track time.
